How to Design Hotels for Disassembly A Sustainable Approach

How to Design Hotels for Disassembly A Sustainable Approach

Today we discuss how to design hotels for disassembly in a sustainable approach. We are going to explore a fascinating topic: how demolition can be integrated into the design and construction of hotels and resorts. Yes, you heard that right: demolition as a design feature!

What is Design for Disassembly?

Design for disassembly (DfD) is a concept that aims to reduce waste and environmental impact by designing buildings that can be easily taken apart and reused or recycled. DfD considers how each component of a building can be separated, recovered, and reused in a new context. This way, instead of sending tons of materials to landfills, we can extend their lifespan and reduce the need for new resources.

Why Design Hotels for Disassembly?

Hotels are one of the most resource-intensive types of buildings, as they require constant maintenance, renovation, and replacement of furniture, fixtures, and equipment. According to a study by Cornell University, hotels generate an average of 29.5 kg of waste per room per day, which amounts to millions of tons of waste per year globally. Most of this waste ends up in landfills or incinerators, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation.

Disassembly Bornholm Hotels

By designing hotels for disassembly, we can reduce the amount of waste generated by hotels and create more value from the materials used. For example, we can reuse furniture, fixtures, and equipment in other hotels or donate them to local communities. We can also recycle building materials such as wood, metal, glass, and concrete into new products or use them as raw materials for other industries. This way, we can save money on disposal costs, create new revenue streams from recovered materials, and support circular economy initiatives.

How CREATOR’S Design Hotels for Disassembly?

We design hotels for disassembly using a modular approach. This means we divide the hotel into smaller units or modules that can be easily assembled and disassembled on-site. Each module consists of a prefabricated steel frame that supports the walls, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, plumbing, electrical wiring, and HVAC systems. The modules are then transported to the site and connected to form the hotel structure.

The modular approach has several advantages for designing hotels for disassembly:

  • It reduces construction time and costs by allowing for mass production and standardization of modules in factories.
  • It improves quality and safety by minimizing errors and defects during fabrication and installation.
  • It enhances flexibility and adaptability by enabling customization and reconfiguration of modules according to different needs and preferences.
  • It facilitates disassembly and reuse by allowing for easy detachment and separation of modules and their components.

At CREATOR’S, we also use sustainable materials and practices throughout the design and construction process. For example, we use recycled steel for the frames, low-VOC paints and coatings for the walls, energy-efficient LED lighting for the rooms, and water-saving fixtures for the bathrooms. We also implement green building certifications such as LEED and BREEAM to ensure that our hotels meet high standards of environmental performance.

Conclusion

To design a hotel for disassembly means to think ahead of how the hotel can be taken apart and reused or recycled at the end of its life cycle. This is a sustainable approach that reduces waste, saves resources, creates value, and supports a circular economy. At CREATOR’S, we are experts in designing hotels for disassembly using modular techniques and sustainable materials. Why Utopian Architecture Doesn’t Work for Hotels!

Why Utopian Architecture Doesn’t Work for Hotels!

Hi, I’m Bert Bykes, co-founder of CREATOR’S, a leading hospitality design firm. In today’s post, I’ll explain why why utopian architecture doesn’t work is for hotels.

Utopian architecture refers to visionary, experimental designs aimed at crafting ideal environments. Think Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic domes or Kenzo Tange’s floating cities.

These concepts are fascinating, but impractical for hospitality projects.

Expensive and Complex

Utopian designs require advanced engineering, rare materials, and complex construction. This makes them cost-prohibitive and challenging to build and maintain safely, efficiently, and sustainably.

Alienating for Guests and Staff

The radical, unfamiliar forms of utopian architecture may not align with guest expectations or comfort. The unusual spaces can also frustrate hotel staff operations and service.

Detached From Local Context

Utopian designs often ignore the local history, culture, values, and urban context. This can feel disconnected and inauthentic for guests looking to engage with the destination.

At CREATOR’S, we take a balanced approach. Our expertise in design and planning allows us to craft solutions that are creative yet feasible, deliver operational excellence, and celebrate the local spirit.

Some of our projects include:

TheHYPE Hotels – Stylish, vibrant hotels for young travelers

– The Peninsula Hotel Bangkok – Luxury reflecting Thai heritage

– Anantara Bali – Natural sanctuary blending with island beauty

Let’s discuss how our 25+ years of experience can make your hospitality vision a reality. Get in touch today or download our free Top 10 Hotel Development Pitfalls guide.

Looking forward to creating your dream property!

Kids-Free Restaurants in Hotels and Resorts: Should They be a Thing?

Kids-Free Restaurants in Hotels and Resorts: Should They be a Thing?

We would like to join the debate about whether kids-free restaurants in hotels and resorts: should they be a thing.

This has been debated by hoteliers and guests alike for several years and there was never a real conclusion to this. On the one hand, some believe that having kids-free restaurants can create a more peaceful and relaxing environment for couples and individuals seeking a quiet getaway. We think it is unfair to discriminate against families with children and that hotels and resorts should always try to be inclusive and accommodating to all guests.

Ultimately, the decision to have kids-free restaurants in hotels and resorts depends on several factors. Some of these factors are as follows:

Target Audience: One of the most crucial considerations when deciding whether to have kids-free restaurants in hotels and resorts is the target audience. Some resorts and hotels cater to families with children, and having kids-free restaurants may not align with their target market. For example, a family-oriented resort that offers various activities and amenities for children may not see the need to have kids-free restaurants. In contrast, a resort that caters to couples or individuals seeking a peaceful and relaxing environment may benefit from having kids-free restaurants.

Location: Another factor to consider when deciding whether to have kids-free restaurants is the resort’s location. If the resort is located in a popular tourist area that attracts families with children, it may not be practical to have kids-free restaurants. In contrast, if the resort is located in an area that primarily attracts couples or adults, having kids-free restaurants may make sense.

Facilities: The resort’s facilities are another important consideration when deciding whether to have kids-free restaurants. If the resort offers various activities and amenities for children, such as a kids’ club or a children’s pool, it may not be necessary to have kids-free restaurants. However, if the resort’s facilities are geared towards adults, having kids-free restaurants may be a suitable option.

Legal Implications: It is essential to consider the legal implications of having kids-free restaurants. Even though some children or families may violate anti-discrimination laws in some regions. It is therefore important that hotels and resorts must be mindful of the legal consequences of implementing such policies. Some countries, Japan is one of them, have put laws in place that prohibit discrimination against families with children in public spaces.

In conclusion, whether to have kids-free restaurants in hotels and resorts is a business decision that should take into account the resort’s target audience, location, facilities, and legal implications. While some guests may prefer to have kids-free restaurants, others may see it as discriminatory. Ultimately, it is up to hotels and resorts to striking a balance between creating a peaceful and relaxing environment for adults and being inclusive and accommodating to all guests, including families with children.
