Beyond Beauty: The Dark Side of Dazzling Hotel Designs

Beyond Beauty: The Dark Side of Dazzling Hotel Designs

At first glance, stunning architectural and interior hotel designs seem impressive. Sleek, lavish aesthetics promoted via glossy marketing materials. But without function, engineering, and safety considerations, the allure soon fades.

Far too often, lavish hotels neglect back-of-house workflows, accessibility, climate-appropriate materials, safety codes, and mechanical planning. Pursuing visual artistry over purpose leads to spaces that disappoint, frustrate staff, or worse – endanger guests.

Common Issues in Style-Focused Designs

– Inadequate back-of-house and storage spaces
– Poorly planned room layouts
– Low-quality finishes unsuited to climate
– Overflowing mechanical rooms
– Non-compliant fire safety systems
– Slippery floors lacking drainage
– Hidden hazards like faulty wiring

The Results of Form over Function?

Plumbing leaks, wet floors leading to falls, overlooked fire risks, mechanically overloaded engineers scrambling to prevent catastrophe, accessibility issues, and very unhappy guests and staff.

While dazzling and opulent designs have their place in hospitality, they must be balanced with purposeful engineering, layout, material selection, and safety considerations. Unfortunately, many developers realize this far too late, or never at all.

Achieving Safe & Functional Designs Without Sacrificing Beauty

The solution lies in collaboration across disciplines starting day one, including:

– Engineers providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire safety guidance
– Operators giving input on workflows and layouts
– End users identifying potential safety risks
– Owners keeping projects on-brand and on-budget

With aligned vision across stakeholders, hotels can achieve gorgeous aesthetics alongside:

– Spaces supporting staff operations and guest needs
– Future-proofed mechanicals and technology
– Local climate and weather-appropriate materials
– Compliance with all safety and accessibility codes
– Luxurious yet livable room configurations

By valuing form and function equally, hospitality design can dazzle safely, sustainably, and beautifully for years to come. But vanity alone leads to disappointment. It’s time to demand more from design to protect our people and planet.

The Bottom Line

Stunning hotel design provides an important sense of place and luxury for guests. But prioritizing beauty over purpose, engineering, durability, and safety carries consequences – dangerous, expensive, and tragic.

The solution lies in balanced design thinking across stakeholders, and setting clear expectations around safety and function from day one.

With aligned vision, and creativity coupled with technical expertise, the hospitality industry can deliver the awe-inspiring yet livable spaces travelers desire and employees deserve.

But we must challenge shallow, stylistic designs with no substance. Demand more from architects, developers, and brands.

Because when form ignores function, we all suffer consequences. Through collaboration and purpose, safety and beauty can harmoniously coexist in hospitality.

With decades of experience designing award-winning hospitality properties, I’m eager to collaborate with developers, architects, and brands committed to balancing creativity with safety and function.

Let’s work together to craft spaces that wow visitors while supporting seamless operations, sustainability, and most importantly – human wellbeing. The potential is vast when we unify artistry with ethics and purpose.

I look forward to helping elevate your next project to new heights. Let’s design exceptional hospitality experiences that shine beautifully inside and out.

Thank you!

Qatar Airways Premier Lounge Bangkok: A Project Consultant Perspective

Qatar Airways Premier Lounge Bangkok: A Project Consultant Perspective

Qatar Airways Premier Lounge Bangkok: A Project Consultant Perspective

CREATOR’S were appointed as Project Consultants for the new build Qatar Airways Premier Lounge Bangkok at Suvarnabhumi Airport and worked together with our partners SEA Consult acting as Cost Consultants, M&E and Kitchen Consultants, and Project & Construction Managers for the 700m2 airport lounge.

As project consultants for the new-built Qatar Airways Premier Lounge Bangkok, our role was to oversee and manage all aspects of the lounge’s construction and development project.

We worked closely with the design and construction teams to ensure that the project was completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. This includes coordinating and managing all contractors and subcontractors involved in the project, as well as ensuring that all necessary airport authority permits and approvals are obtained.

We also were responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive project plan that included a timeline, budget, and key milestones. This plan served as a roadmap for the entire project team and helped us to identify potential issues or delays before they occur.

As project consultants, we were the primary point of contact between Qatar Airways and the project team. We provided regular updates on the project’s progress and worked with the team addressing any issues or concerns that did arise.

Our ultimate goal as project consultants for the Qatar Airways Premier Lounge Bangkok was to ensure that the project was completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards, while also ensuring that the lounge meets the needs and expectations of Qatar Airways and its customers.

This was a very challenging new-build fit-out that had a 6-month construction program started on 1 May 2018 despite many challenging design and logistics issues, and unexpectedly due to access pass restrictions, the project was successfully completed and handed over to the client on 1 September 2018.

The key teams consulting on this project were:
TP Bennet Design
SEA Consult
Thanakorn Kitchen Consultants
Permasteel Interiors

How Technology Can Help Us Create Concepts for Hotel Design

How Technology Can Help Us Create Concepts for Hotel Design

Do you want to know, how technology can help us create concepts for hotel design? Firstly, we want to design innovative and unique hotels that stand out from the crowd! We do this by using technology that can help you create hotel concepts that cater to the needs and desires of today’s travellers. If so, this blog post is for you!

CREATOR’S is a team of creative and unique design thinkers who specialise in creating stories for sustainable lifestyle projects. They have worked on various types of projects, such as hotels, resorts, residences, F&B chains and private estates, across South East Asia and beyond. They have also partnered with many iconic branded projects in the hospitality industry.

Technology is shaping the way we live, work, and travel. It is also transforming the hospitality industry and the way hotels are designed and operated. In this blog post, we will explore how technology can help CREATOR’S, a leading hospitality consultancy firm, create concepts for your hotel and resort designs that are innovative, sustainable, and engaging for guests and operators.

Some of the ways, how technology can help us create concepts for hotel design are:

  1. Researching your target market; Before you start designing your hotel concept, you need to know who your target market is and what they are looking for in a hotel. Technology can help you gather and analyze data from various sources, such as online reviews, social media, surveys, booking platforms, etc. This data can help you identify the preferences, expectations, behaviours, and pain points of your potential guests. You can use this information to create personas that represent your ideal guests and design your hotel concept around their needs and desires.
  2. Developing your hotel story and identity: Your hotel concept should have a clear and compelling story that defines its purpose, vision, values, and personality. Your story should also reflect the location, culture, history, and uniqueness of your hotel. Technology can help you craft your hotel story and identity by providing you with inspiration, tools, and platforms. For example, you can use online sources to research the history and culture of your destination, use design software to create your logo and visual identity, use storytelling platforms to share your story with your audience, etc.
  3. Creating immersive and interactive spaces: Your hotel concept should create spaces that are not only comfortable and functional, but also immersive and interactive. Technology can help you create spaces that stimulate the senses and enhance the guest experience by using elements such as lighting, sound, scent, temperature, etc. For example, you can use smart lighting systems to create different moods and atmospheres in different areas of your hotel, use sound systems to play music or ambient sounds that match your hotel theme or guest preferences, use scent diffusers to create aromas that evoke emotions or memories, use climate control systems to adjust the temperature according to the season or time of day, etc.
  4. Offering personalized and customized services: Your hotel concept should offer services that are not only efficient and convenient, but also personalized and customized. Technology can help you offer services that make your guests feel special and valued by using elements such as data, automation, artificial intelligence, etc. For example, you can use data from previous stays or online profiles to tailor your services to each guest’s preferences and needs, use automation systems to streamline check-in and check-out processes or offer self-service options, use artificial intelligence systems to provide chatbots or virtual assistants that can answer questions or provide recommendations 24/7.
  5. Process automation and virtualization: Technology can enable more efficient and flexible design and construction processes, such as 3D printing, digital modelling, and prefabrication.
  6. The future of connectivity: Technology can enhance the guest experience and satisfaction by providing faster and more reliable digital connections, such as 5G, IoT, and smart devices.
  7. Distributed infrastructure: Technology can improve the security, scalability, and resilience of data storage and processing, such as cloud computing, edge computing, blockchain, and Web3.
  8. Next-generation computing: Technology can solve complex problems and accelerate scientific discovery, such as quantum computing, neuromorphic computing, and optical computing.
  9. Advanced materials: Technology can improve the performance and sustainability of various products and systems, such as nanomaterials, metamaterials, biodegradable plastics, and smart textiles.
  10. Biotechnology: Technology can enhance human health, agriculture, and biofuels, such as gene editing, synthetic biology, bioprinting, and microbiome engineering.
  11. Neurotechnology: Technology can enable new ways of communication, learning, and entertainment, such as brain-computer interfaces, neurostimulation, neuroimaging, and neurofeedback.
  12. Digital health: Technology can improve access, quality, and affordability of healthcare, such as wearables, telemedicine, digital therapeutics, and artificial intelligence.
  13. Green technology: Technology can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change, such as renewable energy sources, energy storage systems, carbon capture and utilization technologies, and electric vehicles.
  14. Space technology: Technology can expand our exploration and utilization of outer space, such as reusable rockets, satellite constellations, lunar missions, and asteroid mining.
  15. Digital interactive art: Technology can create immersive and interactive environments that engage guests emotionally and intellectually.

In conclusion: These are some of the many possible ways how technology can help us create concepts for hotel design. However, they are not the only factors that influence the design process, we also need to consider the needs and preferences of their clients, investors, developers and family offices. Technology can be a tool that supports these activities but not a substitute for them.

We hope you enjoyed this blog post and learned something new about how technology can help us create concepts for hotel design.

The Five Myths About Hotel Interior Design

The Five Myths About Hotel Interior Design

CREATOR’S will always point out to our clients that hotel interior design is an art form that combines aesthetics, functionality, and guest experience to create a memorable and enjoyable stay for guests. Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions and myths about hotel interior design that can hinder one’s ability to create a successful and profitable hotel. In this article, we will discuss five common myths of hotel interior design.

Myth 1: Hotels Must Be Uniform and Generic

One of the most common myths about hotel interior design is that hotels must be uniform and generic, with identical rooms and decor. While consistency is important for branding and guest experience, hotels can also benefit from unique and distinctive design elements that set them apart from the competition. Effective hotel design balances brand identity with individuality, creating a unique and memorable experience for guests.

Myth 2: A High Price Tag Equals Quality

Another myth about hotel interior design is that a high price tag equals quality. While it is true that high-end materials and finishes can add to the overall quality of the space, cost does not necessarily equate to quality. Effective hotel design should prioritize functionality, practicality, and guest experience, creating a space that is beautiful and functional without breaking the bank.

Myth 3: Hotels Must Follow the Latest Trends

Many people believe that hotels must follow the latest design trends to stay relevant and competitive. While trends can be a source of inspiration, blindly following them can result in a space that feels dated and impersonal. Effective hotel design should consider the guest experience and prioritize practicality and comfort over trends, creating a space that is timeless and memorable.

Myth 4: Hotel Design is Only for the Common Areas

Another common myth about hotel interior design is that it is only important for the common areas, such as the lobby and restaurant. However, the guest rooms are just as important, if not more so, as they are where guests will spend the majority of their time. Effective hotel design should consider both the common areas and guest rooms, creating a cohesive and memorable experience throughout the entire hotel.

Myth 5: Hotel Design is One-and-Done

Finally, many people believe that hotel design is a one-and-done process, with no need for updates or changes. However, effective hotel design is dynamic and constantly evolving. Guest preferences and expectations change over time, and hotels must adapt to meet these changing needs. By regularly refreshing and updating the design, hotels can keep guests engaged and excited about their stay.

In conclusion, there are many myths about hotel interior design that can hinder one’s ability to create a successful and profitable hotel. By dispelling these myths and focusing on creating a unique and memorable experience for guests that prioritizes both aesthetics and functionality, hotels can create a loyal following and stand out in a crowded market.

So why not discuss your plans with our experienced and innovative CREATOR’S team and let our successful track record show you how we can help you to create a successful realization for your hotel, resort and residential property development or rebranding projects?
